About Visionary engineer Dr. M Visvesvaraya

Engineers' Day in India is celebrated on September 15th every year to honor the contributions of engineers. It coincides with the birth anniversary of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, a renowned engineer in India. Visvesvaraya played a significant role in shaping India's infrastructure and industrial landscape, including overseeing the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam. He also served as the Diwan of Mysore and received India's highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna.

Dr. Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, fondly known as M Visvesvaraya or Sir MV, was born on September 15, 1861, in Muddenahalli, Karnataka. He earned recognition as a distinguished civil engineer, statesman, scholar, and visionary who played an instrumental role in shaping India's infrastructure, irrigation, and industrial landscape.

One of his noteworthy achievement achievements was overseeing the construction of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore, the largest reservoir in Asia during its time. Additionally, he innovatively designed and patented automatic weir water floodgates, first implemented at the Khadakvasla Reservoir near Pune.

Beyond engineering, Visvesvaraya's leadership extended to serving as the Diwan of Mysore from 1912 to 1918, during which he spearheaded numerous reforms in education, agriculture, commerce, and public works. His achievements also included the establishment of organizations such as the Government Engineering College in Bangalore (now known as University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering), the Karnataka Bank, the Century Club, and the Mysore Chamber of Commerce.

For his amazing achievements, he was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honor, in 1955. His amazing life ended in 1962, when he was 101 years old.

Visvesvaraya, also founded the All India Manufacturer's Organisation in 1941 , which till date serves the MSME and startups to fulfil his vision
